Why Dubai water behaves as it does

Dubai's supply is largely desalinated, then remineralised and blended before distribution. The result is water that is safe, treated to a high standard, and mineral-hard. Hardness is not a health concern; it is a mechanical one. Dissolved minerals precipitate out when water is heated or evaporates, and they deposit on whatever surface was nearest.

That deposition is cumulative and it happens fastest exactly where you least want it: on heating elements, inside valves, in narrow pipework and on the moving parts of anything that mixes hot and cold.

Where the money actually goes

Water heaters absorb the largest cost. Scale forms an insulating layer on the element, so the heater runs longer to reach temperature, consuming more electricity for the same hot water, and the element eventually fails. A heater that should last a decade routinely fails at six to eight years here, and much of that gap is scale.

Mixer taps and shower valves are next. Their cartridges are precision components with small clearances, and scale seizes them — which is why dripping mixers appear so early in Dubai properties. Then there is the slow narrowing of pipework, experienced as pressure that faded so gradually nobody noticed until it was bad.

The symptoms to read

White crust at tap outlets and shower heads is the visible marker, and it indicates what is happening where you cannot see. Shower glass that clouds permanently despite cleaning is calcium bonded to the surface. Reduced flow from one outlet is usually a blocked aerator; reduced flow everywhere is the pipework or the pump.

Soap that lathers poorly, more detergent needed in the washing machine, and dishes with spotting are all the same story. So is a kettle that scales within weeks — which is a useful and free hardness test for your own supply.

What actually helps

Annual water heater servicing — descaling the element and checking the anode — is the highest-return intervention, because it addresses the most expensive failure. Cleaning tap aerators and shower heads periodically restores flow for the cost of ten minutes. Whole-property softening or conditioning systems are effective and worth considering for villas, though they add their own maintenance obligation.

The one thing not worth doing is ignoring it on the basis that the water is safe to drink. It is — that was never the question. The question is what it is doing to the equipment it passes through, and the answer is predictable enough to plan around.
